Sound Recording Review

Barking at airplanes
by Ralph Novak.

Kim Carnes Carnes' voice is so enchanting--it's the aural equivalent of being licked by a kitten--that she doesn't always need spectacular material. This LP blends the surefire attraction of that voice with a nicely varied batch of songs and a tight, charged-up sound, co-produced by Carnes and her longtime keyboard player Bill Cuomo. There are such infectious pop rockers as Begging for Favors (Learning How Things Work) and Abadabadango, as well as smoky torchers, such as Clive Gregson's Touch and Go. Hotshot pals like Lindsey Buckingham, Martha Davis, Ry Cooder and James Ingram show up for backup duties, though it's saxophonist Jerry Peterson and singer Daniel Moore whose contributions make the most impact. Carnes has had plenty of moments before but she's never recorded an album as pleasing as this. (EMI)
