Fleetwood Mac fans bundle up against big chill, get a hot show

By Miriam Longino

FINAL

Fleetwood Mac rolled into Atlanta on Saturday night to a chilly reception - but only from the weather. The legendary rock band played to a sold-out house at Lakewood Amphitheatre, where fans stood, screamed and sang along despite of near freezing temperatures.

Bundled in heavy coats and winter hats, the fans hauled in sleeping bags and blankets to the outdoor venue, which looked more like an Army camped out in winter than a fun fest. There were delays: a blown- out generator caused the concert to get under way 45 minutes late.

Once the band took the stage, however, the crowd warmed up to a two-hour set of mostly familiar tunes commemorating the 20th anniversary of Fleetwood Mac's landmark album "Rumours." The show kicked off with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham plucking the familiar opening notes of "The Chain," followed by a mix of hits and new material from the group' s current CD, "The Dance."

If the temperature onstage was icy, the band didn't seem to notice. The only sign of winter under the spotlight was the occasional burst of white breath hanging in the air when Buckingham bent his head back to belt out his tunes. Nicks lived up to her witchy reputation, twirling in beaded capes while delivering classics such as "Dreams."

Execs privately muttered that they had no idea the temperature would be so cold when they booked Fleetwood Mac into Lakewood, but the fans hung in. Fleetwood Mac winds up its reunion tour at the end of this month, and so far has made no plans to tour again.
