Say You Will Review (By Sensible Sound Magazine)

Christine McVie once lamented that with three songwriters in the band (herself, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks) that they should be able to do better than one album every two or three years. Indeed, after her departure, the band has only the other two, and the gaps between albums are even more dramatic. Say You Will is an ambitious release, one would suggest designed to put the Mac back on the pop map,and in that it only partially succeeds. Longtime observers acknowledge that this edition of the band (with and without McVie), lasting longer than all the previous versions combined, has found a large measure of its strength in its members' personal tensions and occasional turmoil. Plainly, the languishing feud between Nicks and Buckingham throws a bit of fuel on the creative fires, but these days they're slugging it out out of habit instead of passion. So, the result is a discwith some fiery moments and a lot of predictability-a stifled yawn. I still hold Mick Fleetwood and John McVie in idolatrous esteem as one of the very finest rhythm sections of the last 40 years, and Fleetwood's softly understated backbeat hasn't lost the merest measure. Like Steely Dan fans and Everything Must Go, diehard Fleetwood Mac fans will find Say You Will is essential. It's not, but it's not bad either.
