Orange County Register Review Under The Skin (A-)
Orange Country Register 10/6/2006
•Lindsey Buckingham, "Under the Skin" (Warner Bros.) – Freed from Fleetwood Mac and the need to streamline his songs for a spell, Buckingham unleashes his guitar virtuosity, the haunting side of his husky voice and a delicate studio wizardry on this naked, deceptively multilayered and seemingly autobiographical solo set, his first in 14 years.
A marvelous cover of "I Am Waiting" sets the tone: There are happier bits, including a quietly kaleidoscopic remake of Donavon's "To Try for the Sun," yet the Stones redo, along with the gripping opener "Not Too Late," state a theme of hopefulness amid disillusionment so stirringly even slighter songs fall into place.
It's not your typical Buckingham record; that's partly what's so great about it. It's weird, fractured, intense, profoundly beautiful and more focused than anything else he's done. (He plays Nov. 3 at the Grove of Anaheim and Nov. 10 at the Wiltern LG.) Grade: A-
