Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac (Miami Herald Review)

* Many years before Fleetwood Mac found commercial success in saccharine pop, there was Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. That earlier version of the band featured three lead guitar players -- Green, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan -- along with drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, and performed a bruising Chicago-style blues with an unmatched combination of originality and integrity. That version of the group peaked in 1969-70 and disintegrated when the guitarists left for various reasons. There are few live recordings available of the early Mac; the most notable is a repackaged show at the fabled Boston Tea Party night club in the early '70s. But now comes Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac Live At the BBC, recorded between 1967-70. The sound is impeccable and the set includes blues (Mississippi Fred McDowell's Got To Move and Elmore James' Madison Blues and Mean Mistreatin' Mama) and bona fide rockers (Can't Believe You Wanna Leave, Buddy's Song) along a few classic originals, most notably a tart, nasty Oh, Well and a dreamy Albatross. (No, sorry, no Black Magic Woman or Green Manalishi here). Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and the pop hits came later. I for one like my Fleetwood Mac straight up, thanks.
