"Mac" Guitarist

by Fred Schruers

Lindsey Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac's lanky and newly shaven guitarist, is back in fine fettle after a bad scare. The road-weary guitarist had what his press agent called "a seizure" and collapsed just before the band's appearance here in Philadelphia on July 30. Buckingham played effectively anyway, but his troubles only worsened after he was taken to a local hospital for tests. A spinal tap that left a painful wound in the small of his back (aggravated by the next day's plane ride to Washington, D.C.) caused Buckingham severe headaches every time he stood up. The band's next three dates were canceled, but Buckingham returned to action in Largo, Maryland, and played what the Washington Post called "the freshest and most aggressive" guitar of his career. He disdained use of the stool that had been set up at the side of the stage (doctors had recommended he sit for half the performance).
