MICK FLEETWOOD'S WEDDING BELL BLUES
by Arlene Vigoda
Mick Fleetwood's "I do's" have come undone. The Fleetwood Mac drummer was to have married long-time sweetie Lynn Frankel Saturday in Laughlin, Nev., aboard a paddlewheel boat as thousands of Harley-Davidson bikers, in town for a "Love Ride," cheered them on. But the wedding was suddenly canceled after Frankel's father, Robert, 70, died of a heart attack Friday night in Las Vegas. The funeral was scheduled for Monday in New York.
"The marriage conversation has taken a back seat for now," says Carl Stubner, Fleetwood's manager. When the couple got the news Saturday morning, "Lynn was on the verge of collapsing and Mick was distraught." But he and his blues band, the Blue Whale, still performed Saturday night at the Colorado Belle riverboat/hotel/casino. "He'll never cancel a date," Stubner says. "Ever since he became sober three years ago, he's become a workaholic."
In a conversation Friday, a jubilant Fleetwood said from Nevada: "We decided on the spur of the moment and thought, 'Hey, let's get married on the river.' The whole scene seemed sufficiently bizarre enough to do it here." A Learjet had been rented for guests, including John McVie, Dave Mason and Gary Busey. "We were able to contact Dave, who spread the word," Stubner says. Fleetwood, who says he's 48 (source books put him at 52), says Fleetwood Mac is readying a new album, yet untitled, due in September. "It's very identifiable with our sound. Then it gently slips into a more gutsy approach."
Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, is he in touch with ex- bandmates Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham? "I saw Stevie at a Halloween party that I threw. There's no weird blood between us," he says. "I would really like to see her find a great writing partner. She used to work so well with Lindsey." As for Buckingham: "He's very gifted, really of the caliber of Brian Wilson in terms of intensity and talent."
