Best of '97

By Mike Mettler

BEST SONG: Fleetwood Mac: Silver Springs

While the melancholy B-side chestnut that is Fleetwood Mac's "Silver Springs" may have first been recorded over 22 years ago, its true bittersweet meaning came to full bloom during the performance that graces Mac's live '97 comeback special, The Dance (Reprise). When Stevie Nicks turns and locks eyes with her ex-lover, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, as she sings lines like "You'll never get away from the sound of a woman that loves you," "was I just a fool," and "give me one more chance," you really connect with the spectre of hope that's attached to forever-lost opportunities. But you don't need the accompanying visual to experience the powerful emotional undertow "Springs" carries -you only need to hear the Mac's sweet harmonies and supple sonic delivery in order to get the full picture. It's a touching lament that only gets more poignant with age and perspective.

Thanks to Keith for posting this to The Ledge and to Anusha for sending it to us.
